The next
leap in electronic documents is the “Smart Document” which is a cross
between the static office document we have historically used and an
application with data. Smart Documents incorporate
templating capabilities; programming functionality; linkage to other
documents; as well as metadata about the document and its use.
One major example of Smart Documents is
the Smart Document and Smart Tag functionality within Microsoft Word 2003
documents and Excel 2003 workbooks. Microsoft, with Office 2003, supports
the ability to create standardized documents and workbooks that can be
customized by filling in specific information.
