Smart Documents – The Next Step in the Evolution of Document Creation

The next leap in electronic documents is the “Smart Document” which is a cross between the static office document we have historically used and an application with data. Smart Documents incorporate templating capabilities; programming functionality; linkage to other documents; as well as metadata about the document and its use.

One major example of Smart Documents is the Smart Document and Smart Tag functionality within Microsoft Word 2003 documents and Excel 2003 workbooks. Microsoft, with Office 2003, supports the ability to create standardized documents and workbooks that can be customized by filling in specific information.

EMC Adds Google to Documentum

Google's Desktop Search (Enterprise version) functionality is to be incorporated in Documentum Enterprise Content Integration (ECI) Services in order to enable organisation and retrieval of 'unstructured data'.

"Unstructured data" in this context refers to the crucial files that, despite the best efforts of ERM and EDM systems and implementers, are still stored locally on desktop PC hard disks. The enterprise version of the Google engine is being used as it enables more granular control of search options.

DOE overspent on software, licenses

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) spent $4.1 million more than necessary during the last five years to acquire and maintain desktop software, according to a report by Gregory Friedman, the department’s inspector general (IG).

The DOE and its facility contractors operate more than 110,000 desktop computers at various locations, running commercial off-the-shelf software that includes office automation, records management, document imaging and antivirus products, the IG said in the report.
